Background and Objectives: Marriage is one of the most important decisions in young people's lives, and changing patterns of marriage in Iran have become a social and demographic concern. This study aimed to determine the level of willingness to marry and identify its related factors among students in Esfarayen County, North Khorasan.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 326 students from universities in Esfarayen County in 2025. Proportionate stratified random sampling was employed. The data collection tool was a questionnaire including demographic information and the Prasad Marriage Motivation Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22, non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis), and Spearman's correlation coefficient. A significance level of 0.05 was considered.
Results: A total of 326 participants took part in the study, of whom 169 (51.8%) were female. The mean age of the participants was 21.60 ± 2.80 years (range: 18–35 years). The mean total score of willingness to marry was 73.62 ± 8.65, which was significantly lower than the cut-off point of 80 (P < 0.001). The mean score of men (75.33 ± 9.08) was significantly higher than that of women (72.04 ± 7.93) (P < 0.001). Students living in rented houses showed a greater willingness to marry compared to those living in dormitories and private homes (P = 0.02). In contrast, no significant relationship was found between age (P = 0.32), educational level (P = 0.54), household size (P = 0.38), source of income (P = 0.17), family financial status (P = 0.06), social media usage (P = 0.26), and substance use history (P = 0.45) with the total score of willingness to marry.
Conclusion: The level of willingness to marry among students in Esfarayen County is low, and demographic factors, living conditions, and attitudes and beliefs towards marriage play an important role in this regard. The findings emphasize the need to pay attention to gender differences and provide appropriate support to students living in dormitories. Also, strengthening positive attitudes towards marriage and providing accurate and realistic information about its advantages and disadvantages can be effective in increasing the willingness to marry. |
